VariQ has an exciting opportunity for a highly qualified Senior System Engineer to support the LDSI effort with the US House of Representative in Washington, DC.


Job Description:

The selected candidate will provide mission critical work to develop, evaluate, and implement technical solutions for IT service related projects.  Candidate will be expected to fill technical leadership roles on IT projects with an emphasis on consultation and customer relationship management. The engineer will also provide tier 3 support as needed to maintain continued operations of customer systems.

Services to customers include but are not limited to:

  • Maintain a very personable demeanor and professional approach to delivering consultation to government customers, to provide industry standard solutions and best practice advice on system design choices and system procurement decisions
  • Design/Architect/Maintain on-premises VMware environment and Windows Servers that reside within both cleared and uncleared environments
  • Establish/Maintain/Respond to system monitoring alerts utilizing a variety of industry standard tools (example SolarWinds , Nagios, ….etc)
    • Both system availability and business process monitoring
  • Familiarity with and ability to design/build/maintain system architecture that adheres to Federal Government standards and is secured (hardened according to policy).  Example: Adherence to FISMA/NIST/FIPS standards and ability to achieve system compliance with industry standard hardening techniques like DISA STIGs
  • Status reporting internally and externally for projects and configuration management
  • Operations and Management (O&M) of all customer systems:  Incident management, day-to-day troubleshooting, responsive support for all reported incidents as well as proactively detected issues.


Minimum Required Qualifications:


  • Currently Active Top Secret Clearance (verifiable in JPAS or other related system)
  • Building, troubleshooting and supporting Windows Server operating systems, both virtual and physical servers.
    •  Configure/run various backup solutions & restore from those solutions
    • Configure and maintain local group policy for security
    • Patch systems after peak usage hours
    • Configure and maintain local Firewall settings
    • Manage shares, permissions and NTFS Permissions at a granular level
    • Effectively troubleshoot performance, network and software related issues.
    • Configure/manage replication software
    • SQL Server knowledge. Database rights, table creation, etc.
  • Implementing and supporting VMware to include:
    • vCenter Server build and administration
    • Implementation and support of daily operation of ESXi Host
  • Experience mitigating security vulnerability scans from products similar to Nessus or McAfee Vulnerability Manager (validating & remediating scan results)
  • Candidate must be able to directly interface with customer points of contact when required utilizing strong customer service skills. A personable demeanor and industry standard customer service approach to customer communication, follow up and follow through on customer requests are all desired.
  • Ability to occasionally provide service outside of standard working hours (responding to system alerts from home/VPN or occasional planned on-site/afterhours projects)


Additional Desired Skills (not required):

  • Familiarity with setting up an managing storage solutions to support VMware/Windows Server environments (NetApp appliances or other variants of enterprise storage)
  • Familiarity with Symantec/Veritas Backup Exec software (implementation and troubleshooting)
  • Familiarity with developing and maintaining solid Configuration Management documentation including:
    • System Design Documents
    • Network Diagrams
    • Other key Configuration management artifacts
    • Following a Change Management process to sustain and manage changes to key artifacts.
  • Microsoft SQL Server administration
  • Experience with PowerShell scripting
