Overview

The Linux Administrator will support DevSecOps initiatives in regards to administering, updating, hardening and scripting Linux systems within AWS environments on the program. Provided services will be within the scope of the current Verification Information System (VIS) O&M contract with DHS USCIS. The place of performance is at the VariQ office in Rockville.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities and Tasks:

  • Linux system administration within AWS public cloud deployments
  • Provide Level 3 support for clients and work on infrastructure-as-code related projects
  • Build servers, monitor systems and write scripts to help with automation
  • Part of a larger DevOps team that will support weekly deployments
  • Provide technical assistance to infrastructure stakeholders to resolve failures or address server related issues, and support incident management and problem management activities.
  • Perform production control activities such as the support of cyclical changes to operational workloads, data administration, data compression, data restores, reorganization of files, recovery of systems, production of reports, download/upload of information, setup and verification of files and programs for the execution of production runs specific to the applicable sub-system
  • Provide comprehensive build and change documentation program assets
  • Coordinate OS upgrades, security updates, fixes and testing with DevOps staff.
  • Provide advice and implementation support to address application high availability issues and requirements
  • Identify patches, software updates and configuration updates to improve and maintain VIS application performance, including but not limited to web servers, application servers, communication servers, and network systems

Qualifications

Required:

  • The ability to obtain and maintain a DHS/USCIS EOD Suitability Clearance
  • A Bachelor Degree or equivalent with 5+ years of experience
  • RHCE or equivalent certification
  • A working knowledge of software development using the Agile-Scrum methodology
  • Tools and technologies:
    • OS – RedHat, Suse, Amazon Linux varients
    • Basic working knowledge of networks
    • Physical and virtualized server maintenance and monitoring: CPU, I/O and memory ; Heartbeat (up/down);
    • NewRelic and Splunk monitoring all program assets with the ability to analyze and investigate issues within each tool.
    • Storage and back up within AWS.
  • Excellent communication skills – verbal and written.
  • Excellent troubleshooting and problem solving skills.
  • Customer focus and commitment to deliver high quality results
  • Flexibility to work during off hours on an as-needed basis.

 

Desired:

  • Experience with Amazon Web Services (AWS) strongly desired. Certification will be required if not already acquired within a year of hire.

  • Security-based credentials or training
